News from e-malt USA: Committee approves raising beer alcohol limit in North Carolina

North Carolina is one step closer to raising its cap on alcohol sold in beer. The Senate Commerce Committee approved a bill Tuesday, July 5. It would raise the alcohol limit from 6 percent to 15 percent.

The campaign is called "pop the cap." Supporters say the bill is good for business. Critics worry about the impact on underage drinkers.

"I think it's good for the economy of North Carolina,” said Rep. Stephen Laroque (R-Lenoir).

“I think it's projected to create about 300 new jobs in the state, all without costing the taxpayers a dime."

"Over 50 percent of young people drink to get smashed,” said Rev. Mark Creech of the Christian Action League. “They're just partying and when you can get a quicker buzz and a faster drunk off of these high, potent alcohol beers that's what they're going to go for."

The bill now heads to the full Senate. The house already approved the measure.
